Privacy Policy

Plain language first: we collect only what we need to make the app work. We never sell your data. We never share it with advertisers. What you write in Umbra stays in Umbra.

1. What We Collect

What you give us

Email address — to create your account and send you updates you opted into
Name — to personalize your experience
Birth date, birth time, birth city — to calculate your natal chart. This is core to how the app works.
Cycle data — only if you choose to track. We store your cycle type, last period date, and average cycle length. This is always optional.
Journal entries — the text you write in the app. Stored so you can return to it.

What we collect automatically

General usage patterns — which features you use, how often
Device and browser info — for technical compatibility only
IP address — for security, never for advertising

What we never collect

Payment card details — handled entirely by Stripe, never touches our servers
Location data beyond your birth city
Data from other apps or websites
Advertising or behavioral profiles

2. How We Use Your Data

To calculate your natal chart and generate personalized astrological readings
To produce AI-powered shadow work content based on your chart, the live sky, and your cycle
To save and display your journal entries when you return
To send transactional emails — account confirmation, password reset
To improve the app using aggregated, anonymized usage data

We do not use your personal data to train AI models. Your birth data, journal entries, and cycle data are never used as training data for Umbra's AI or any third-party AI system.

3. Who We Share It With

We share limited data only with the services that power the app. We do not sell it. We do not share it for advertising. The services we use:

Supabase — our database. Stores your account data and journal entries with row-level security — only you can access your own data.
Anthropic — our AI provider. Receives your chart data and journal context to generate readings. Governed by Anthropic's privacy policy.
Stripe — payment processing. Handles subscriptions. We never see your full card number.
Google — city autocomplete in onboarding uses Google Places API. Only your typed city name is sent.

All providers are contractually required to protect your data and may not use it for their own purposes.

4. Sensitive Data

Umbra collects birth information and optionally menstrual cycle data — both are sensitive categories of personal data. We collect them solely to deliver the app's core functionality. We apply heightened protections to this data and never share it with any third party for any purpose beyond operating the app.

5. Data Security

All data is transmitted over HTTPS — encrypted in transit
Database uses row-level security — users can only access their own data
AI interactions are processed server-side — your data never passes directly through your browser to the AI
We retain your data for as long as your account is active
Account deletion removes your personal data within 30 days

6. Your Rights

You have the right to access, correct, or delete your personal data at any time. Email hello@tryumbra.app and we will respond within 30 days.

7. California Privacy Rights (CCPA)

If you are a California resident, you have additional rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act:

Right to know — request a list of personal data we hold about you
Right to delete — request deletion of your personal data
Right to opt out of sale — we do not sell your data, so there is nothing to opt out of
Right to non-discrimination — we will never penalize you for exercising your privacy rights

8. Children

Umbra is not intended for users under 18. We do not knowingly collect data from minors. If you believe a minor has created an account, contact us at hello@tryumbra.app and we will delete it promptly.

9. Changes

We may update this policy as the app evolves. We will notify you of material changes at least 14 days before they take effect. Continued use after that date constitutes acceptance.
